It was a banner year, with jammers creating 10 different games:

TGJ 2013 will be happening sometime later in the year, but hopefully the Global Game Jam will tide you over. NC State is hosting a GGJ site, and it’s coming up soon (Jan 25th – 27th). Please register at http://globalgamejam.org/sites/2013/nc-state-university/ if you can make it.

Triangle Game Jam 2012

We will be having another triangle game jam on November 9th thru the 11th. It will follow a similar format to the past few jams:

Meet Friday night to discuss the theme and form teams
Jam all day Saturday
Jam until 3 pm or so on Sunday, wrap up, and present games

The theme will be decided by mad libs. More details to follow, but the idea is that everyone will contribute a list of 5 words in each of three categories, and we’ll generate random game names from them. Anyone who is inspired by one of the generated titles can pitch their idea, and we’ll whittle down the list and repeat the process.

Global Game Jam on Friday

It’s almost jam time.

Participants are encouraged to arrive starting around 5:00 PM. This will give you time to set up your equipment and meet fellow jammers. When you arrive there will be volunteers available to help you set up and direct you to the proper facilities. Please sign in at this time so we can confirm your arrival at the jam.

Schedule

The Global Game Jam will be held from 6:00 PM Friday (Jan. 27th) to 5 PM Sunday (Jan. 29th). The event will start promptly at 6 PM with a quick introduction and keynote presentation, followed by pitching ideas, discussion and team building.

This year Joystick Labs will be open the full 48 hours over the weekend. While we appreciate the enthusiasm of all participants we highly encourage people to not attempt to stay up the full 48 hours and go home every night to sleep (honestly, 8 hours of sleep and 12 hours of development will almost always produce more / better stuff than 20 hours of development).

On Sunday, development will end at 3 PM. At this time participants must submit their games. We will finish up the jam with presentations from each team and time to play all the games. We’ll also be glad to help out with video capture if anyone wants to put something up on Youtube/Vimeo. After final presentations, all participants must break down their setup and remove all their equipment promptly from the venue.

Friday 27th
5:00 PM – arrive at Joystick Labs, setup
6:00 PM – introduction and discussion
7:00 PM – development time

Saturday 28th
Full day of development

Sunday 29th
2:30 PM – preparing game submissions
3:00 PM – presentations
4:00 PM – break down

Hardware

Participants must provide their own computer setup for the Global Game Jam (desktop or notebook). There will be no computers available for people who do not bring their own equipment. Both wired and wireless internet will be available, but there are a limited number of wired spaces available. If you require wired internet, please try to bring a long Ethernet cable for maximum flexibility in seating.

Software

We will have a SVN server setup to use as a source control repository.

People have typically used XNA, Flash, UDK, or Unity in the past. If you already know you have a preference for one, please try to install it and get it setup ahead of time on the machine you intend to bring to the jam. The same goes for artists or musicians with their preferred tools of choice. We also have a list of some other interesting software for jams on the site: Tools and Libraries.

A representative from Microsoft will be around on Friday (maybe thruout the weekend, details TBD) as well to talk about developing for Windows Phone and the Imagine Cup.

Global Game Jam 2012

I’m happy to announce that we will be hosting a Global Game Jam site in the NC Triangle area again this year, January 27th to the 29th at Joystick Labs in downtown Durham.

More information will follow shortly, but the format will likely be very similar to past years:

Try to arrive between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Friday so that you can setup, unpack, etc…
Getting started around 6:00 PM on Friday, announcing the theme, brainstorming ideas, and forming teams, etc…
Full day of work on Saturday
Finishing up on Sunday by 3:00 PM, showing off the games to each other afterwards.

IDGA Presentations

Last Thursday we presented the results of Triangle Game Jam 2008 to the NC Triangle Chapter of the IGDA. I think all of the games got a great reception which was really gratifying.

Thanks to Adam Creigton, we have videos of some of the presentations. Unfortunately, they aren’t the best quality and some bits of the meeting didn’t get recorded. Maybe next time we will plan a little better.

One of the things Pat (Patrick Sebring) mentioned at the meeting was that the we used a webpage for randomly generating the game titles. If you don’t know why I’m talking about randomly generated game titles, check out the theme description of Triangle Game Jam 2008 on the About page.

Another thing that Pat mentioned is that the SVN repository that we used for version control is still up and is public. That means if you feel like downloading the games to try them out, you can point your SVN client to svn://monkey13.com/gamejam2. However, I warn you that the server doesn’t have amazing speed and we ended up indiscriminately adding lots of stuff to it. If you download the whole depot, you are looking at like 600 megs at very slow speed, so you’d be better served to pick and choose what you want to download. for example, I have added a release build at the location DoubleBeerBlaster/EXE, so you can just pull that and save yourself some time. I did ask that everyone check in a release build, but I think Double Beer Blaster and Musical Dragon Twirler are the only ones that have them. For the rest you will need to install Visual C# Express and XNA Game Studio 2.0 and build the source.

Sorry for taking so long to get the webpage updated. Triangle Game Jam 2008 went down the weekend of May 10-11 and the webpage is finally updated to prove it. You can check out a summary and the games on the Triangle Game Jam 2008 page.

We will be presenting the results of the Triangle Game Jam 2008 to the next IGDA meeting which will be on Thursday, June 19, 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Don’t forget to go to the NC Triangle chapter webpage and RSVP.

Global Game Jam

Last weekend was the first annual Global Game Jam. There were about 20 participants at the triangle site, and around 1600 worldwide. Special thanks to Mike Lee for organizing our group. The triangle group made 4 awesome games which you can read about and download from the Global Game Jam’s game browser: Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill’s Global Game Jam games.
